Trophy awarded to Harry Lee "Spider" Coe as the winner of the One Mile Run
at an event associated with the Vancouver Athletic Club (V.A.C.) on September 2, 1907.
This silver plated Loving Cup was named the G.B. Harris trophy.
Harry Coe was very well known as an athletic star at the University of Michigan, graduating
in the Class of 1907. He was very often mentioned in newspapers while competing (and winning) in many events all across the country.
Eventually he performed in the 1908 Olympics, however he did not reach the final qualifiers in his events.
The trophy stands 11" high and is 6-1/2" across the handles. Very ornate design and patented on the bottom with the
date of Feb 17, 1903, and a manufacturing number of "02106." The weight (before shipping) is approx 2 lbs - 13 oz
The trophy remains in VG condition with minor scratching and tiny dings on the cup itself. The top rim is in very fine condition without a nick or chip.
The handles and base are also in fine condition. A very well made, sturdy, top of the line trophy.
I have uploaded several Harry Coe research items I came across. There are a few from the 1905-07 Michigan yearbooks, as well as
various old newspaper clips from the period, and detailed bio information. Amazingly, I was able to find an article about the
Vancouver event, in which Coe was awarded this trophy. The long article includes the results of every event. Harry Coe's event
has been circled in yellow. These research items are NOT included with the sale of the trophy.
