Fine lot of 4 class photos from Sandy Creek Township, circa 1899-1904.
These are part of a Porter family collection of the same period.
The Porter family lived in Sandy Creek Township, Mercer County PA for several years (see 1900 census image below).
Sisters Bessie + Nellie Porter are in the photos. Bessie is in all four, first as a student,
and then as a teacher. The two later photos are dated Feb 1904, and reveal teacher Bessie Porter
in the back row with her class. Although there are several images to preview below, here is a quick
breakdown of the cabinet photos.
(1) --- c. 1899 photo appears to be a high school class which has several students id'd although
somewhat difficult to decipher. Includes Bess and Nell Porter and Nell Byham. The reverse has "Nellie Porter"
in cursive, as well as "Prof Ira Boles"and "Nell Byham." Handstamped "Matt Miller Meadville Pa." -- 6.5 x 4.5.
Fair condition with corner broken off. This could be Sandy Lake High School.
(2) --- c. 1900 photo appears to be the same school with no students id'd. The reverse has "Bessie Porter" in cursive
and handstamped as above. Also fair condition with creases but does not affect image. Corners ready to break off.
6.5 x 4.5
(3) --- Dated Feb 11, 1904. Bessie Porter as teacher in the back row. These students appear to be much
younger than in the above photos. Date on reverse with "Aunt Bess school."
VG condition. Cannot confirm if this is the same school district but most likely. --- 7.5 x 5.25
(4) --- Dated Feb 11, 1904. Duplicate image of No. 3 above but in lesser condition. Faded image and discoloration.
