Historic program from a game played March 24, 1971, Penguins vs Detroit.
Duane Rupp becomes the first defenseman to record a hat trick for the Penguins.
This is also the last time a Pens defenseman accomplished this at home.
Approaching 60 seasons and no other D-man has done it.
You may guess Carlyle, Murphy, Coffey, Letang, Karlsson? NO
Rupp will always be the only Pens defenseman to score three goals in a game at the Civic Arena.
Paul Coffey and Ron Stackhouse are the only other D-men to record a hat trick,
however, both were in road games.
Rupp only had two goals going into this game.
Side notes: Jim Rutherford was the victim in the nets for the Red Wings.
Gordie Howe actually played a few shifts on defense, humorously commenting after the game
"I'm in the position, I don't know if I'm playing it."
There is a nice Gordie Howe feature article inside.
The program is in EX condition.
