Great original cabinet photo of the Hyde Park football team, circa 1904-1905.

I have done extensive research on the team and some of the players.

Hyde Park developed many fine athletes during this time, and many were recruited to play

various sports at the University of Chicago under the legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg.

He led the "Maroons" to many victories during this era and were recognized as National Champions of 1905 + 1913.

What makes this photo most appealing is the name "Stagg" is written in pencil on the reverse with the

number "5704" and the word "School" which may have been a phone number.

I can only speculate as to the original owner of this photo.

Interestingly, there are two other important names printed on the back as well.

First is the name "G. Keebler" with his phone number of "Doug 102."

This turns out to be "Gilbert Keebler" who became the manager of the team in 1904,

and is presumably wearing the cap in the photo.

Please review some of the information discovered on him.

Secondly, is the name of "CW French" noted as "Prin HP."  He has been confirmed as

the Principal at Hyde Park for several years.  You may also review a bit of info on him as well.

In my opinion, this photo was in the hands of Principal French, who signed his name,

and scribbled the name of Manager Keebler (and phone) for the intention of handing it over to Stagg.

Perhaps this photo did make it to Coach Stagg and kept in his athletic office for recruiting purposes.

As for the players in the photo, one player who I can positively identify is the great athlete,

William J, Sunderland, Hyde Park Class of 1906, who went on to play

football and baseball for Stagg at the University of Chicago.

I was able to find his photo in a U of C yearbook and compared it to the cabinet photo.

The other players could be identified from various Hyde Park football news clippings,

and also the 1906 Hyde Park graduation list, most notably Sunderland and Stern.

Many of these clippings can be viewed below.

As you notice in my images, the photo has separated into 3 sections,

but can easily be assembled to create a fine original print if desired.

The cabinet photo is in good condition despite the separation.  There are rough borders,

and some scuffing at the top, but this does not detract.

The players and uniforms are in fine focus.

 Overall measuring approximately 12 x 10.

ABSOLUTELY NO RETURNS ON ORIGINAL PHOTOS AND DOCUMENTS

PLEASE NOTE:  The research materials are NOT included with the sale of the photo, however,

the buyer is welcome to print them.  Thank  you.
